Official "Man there are so many people who have it rough and I have NO REASON to ever complain" Week!

1/20/14

Happy Martin Luther King Jr Day! It was so funny because I have it on my calendar, but we don't celebrate it here in Canada. Hope you had a good week.

Okay...this week WAS SO MUCH BETTER! We had an exchange with the sister tra
i
ning leaders. I stayed here in Brantford with Sister (name), who is going home next week. I feel like I've always been jackpotting on exchanges! The last two exchanges have been with the most experienced sister missionaries who have impacted me so much. I'm so grateful for Sister (name)...she is AMAZING!!! My comp and I also saw so many miracles. We got six new investigators...and I don't know if I have time to tell you everything that happened. But I'll give you highli
gh
ts:

First of all, we met (name). She was contacted by missionaries a year ago, but that's all we knew. We dropped by and set up a appointment. We came in and taught her. She's had a ROUGH life full of hurt and abuse. It's just sad. But she amazes me because although she has had gone through so much, she still believes in God and tells us that He has helped her through so much. It's amazing. When we got to the Book of Mormon part, she replied, "Yup I read all of it!" .....I didn't know how to respond to that one! Apparently the missionaries beforehand had given her a Book of Mormon and she had read it in a week. And she knows it's true. And she tries to live according to the book. WHAT?! She accepted baptism...but the thing she's most hesitant about is church. Hopefully next week she'll come. We are seeing her tomorrow.

Next, we met (names). He was baptized a looooong time ago. But he went less active. But now he's here...he used to not be receptive to missionaries. But now he is engaged to (name), who is not a member. They were watching a FLDS program last week and he wanted to show her that we weren't them. She has also had a hard life...and it is super hard for her to trust people. I think she will take time but she is nice. He is also very nice. It's cool because after we taught the restoration, we answered questions that he had had for 40 years he's been a member. Crazy! I think if we help him, she will follow. We'll see though :)

If you haven't noticed, this week has been, "Man there are so many people that have it rough and I have NO REASON to complain...."
week!
So many people here have gone through things I couldn't even imagine. I'm so so so grateful for the gospel. Anyways, we taught this kid and his friend sat in. Both had been in the foster care system and hated it. They are a little older now and they just need direction to go. They wondered why these things happened to them...but to bear testimony of the
A
tonement and to give them the restoration which is all about having hope...was really powerful. They accepted a Book of Mormon. They were so sincere. And so humble. It was really sad because we tried dropping by Sat night to see if he was still good for church. A lady (we didn't know her) answered the door and she started screaming at us and swearing at us to get off the porch...and then she started yelling at him. That was THE WORST. He is NOT in a good living condition at all. He said he's going to move soon but I honestly don't know if we'll be able to teach him just because of the environment. It's sad....but hopefully he can find peace from the Book of Mormon. If (name)can, I know he can too!

Last miracle we've seen is (name). I don't remember if I have told you but he has had it rough. He started to believe in God while he was in jail reading the Bible. My comp and her old companion baptized him and he's made some amazing changes. But he's also been struggling because you know when you make a good decision, Satan always attacks afterwards. We have been praying for the last couple weeks that he could become strong in the church and find joy in it. Som
e
times it's been a struggle to get him to church and even a few weeks ago he told us he was done. But..this last week...members reached out to him...and there has been SUCH a difference in him. Our mission leader's wife was very strongly prompted to buy him a suit and tie...so last saturday she took him shopping and he ended up being in their home for a while. A few nights before, his other home teacher invited him over and he ate and had a good chat with him. Yesterday he came to church...and it was AMAZING. You can see such a difference in him. He was in a suit and tie for the first time. He was talking to people and participating. He had confidence that he had never had before.

Moral of the story: if you have a prompting to help someone...DO IT!  And members...you have such an impact on people. You have no idea. When you reach out to people, it makes such a difference!

God hears and answers our prayers. I'm SO grateful for that.

Well, I don't know what else to say other than yes missions are hard but man I love them. I'm grateful to be here! I've grown so much this last transfer! I've done things that I didn't think I could do. I feel like God puts us in situations to stretch us and help us...and I feel like I've had many stretching opportunities this last transfer. But look at me now! Now I can drive in the snow and I don't freak out too much! I know how to take care of a sick companion! And I'm [still] learning bit by bit how to work in a car area!

I know that this work is true and real. God's work is hastening. I just realized that each of my converts have been from a different corner of the world...(name)from Japan... (name) from Guyana (south america)...(name) (his grandparents are from Ireland)...(name) (from Iran)...and (name) (Nigeria). I'm super blessed! I love it here and I'm just so grateful to serve. I hope I can continue to meet more amazing people! I love everyone SO MUCH!!!!

And I know that patriarchal blessings are so inspired. After a hard day I was praying, and a line from my patriarchal blessing came into my mind. The next morning I picked it up and read...I learned things that I NEVER knew before...It was amazing what God was telling me through my blessing. It was really amazing to see and feel how special that blessing is to me...and how special I feel to God when I read it.

I love you all. Have a great week! Thanks for all your support and love and prayers. I feel them!

Faith = Patient Confidence (even when it's 40 below)

1/12/14

Sounds like it's still snowing pretty bad down home. This last week wasn't that snowy...but it was COLD
T
here was a day where our car didn't even start because it was cold. And we don't have a plug or something to warm it up or anything...or a garage...any ideas on how I can keep it warm? It was quite an adventure. Apparently on our car we have a free "roadside service" number so we called that and you can actually have a guy come and jump your car for free. Who knew? I guess you learn something every day. Now I know what to do if our car ever dies again!

We have a LOT of recent converts here in my new area. So we have been teaching some of them about the temple and family history and I get excited for them! One family is the Henhawkes. They are the cutest family ever and were a part member family but the dad was baptized last March. So it's so cool to help them prepare for the temple so they can be sealed. So exciting!

Well...this week...was hard. But you know what I'm grateful for the hard times because I know they help us grow stronger. Unfort
unately
my comp was sick and we were indoors for five days. But on the up side I guess because of that we didn't have to go outside the day it was -40 degrees outside and now I know how to take care of a sick person! . But I'm so grateful that I didn't get whatever she got..because apparently it's supposed to be pretty contagious. By Saturday she was feeling a LOT better and we got to work the full day so that was good! But due to the crazy week we couldn't see the (name) family..BUT we are seeing them today! I am pumped! (Names) are going out of town so we are going to try to see them in the next few weeks. We saw (name) for a little bit and she said she would come to church if not for her son who has this sickness where he stays up all night throwing up. She's taking him to the doctor this week so hopefully that will help.

We did find a new investigator. We came to the appointment and he told us he's NOT going to be converted. But we had a nice little discussion and apparently one of the reasons why he doesn't want to be Christian is because he knows it has been corrupted and changed over time. So we feel like the Lord is preparing him. We weren't able to teach him the rest but we are planning to this week. He might take time but he's pretty cool and down to earth. If I can describe him in a few words it would be: a deep thinking rockstar. haha.

Right now we are still in rebuilding mode...trying to find more investigators. We've been tracting and dropping by formers and potentials but haven't had the most luck. But I'm excited to be able to work ALL week this week because I feel like it's going to be a lot better.

To answer the rest of your questions: the ward is so awesome. We love them. They feed us a lot and they are really nice people. I really want to continue to get them excited about missionary work. I love them though! They really reached out to us and helped us when my comp was sick. People were bringing over dinners and soups and cough medicine and everything! We feel loved :)

Preparation day? We are going to be cleaning. It's exchanges this week, and so we need to make the place presentable. I've decided that I'm starting to be a more of a clean freak than I used to be. I HATE the house being gross and dirty...I don't know what it is but I'm getting a little more OCD about it. I like our house. It's...homey. haha. It's actually really warm compared to the basement apartments. I like being in a neighborhood and it's cool that we are right next to the train station. It reminds me of our old home in Lehi where we were by the trains...so it makes me feel at home. :)

Anyways, lately I've been so grateful for prayers. I know that it's the times where we feel the most alone where we NEED to turn to our Heavenly Father. It's in those prayers and moments where I am reminded that He knows me and loves me. I had a tender experience this past week where I was praying and felt pretty overwhelmed because of all my shortcomings and weaknesses. But then I read some scriptures afterwards that really touched my heart. It was then that I realized that God knows us so much more than we know ourselves. He knows we are weak and He knows we have shortcomings. But that doesn't mean He doesn't love us. That doesn't mean He is angry at us or upset and just gets frustrated at our weaknesses. He loves us. And we CAN be cleansed of our shortcomings through His
S
on. I loved reading the chapters about how Christ loves and has compassion on so many in the gospels. He healed a leper...who was cast out...and unclean...He loved him and said "be thou clean..." I know Christ can cleanse us not only physically but spiritually as well. And I love when Christ heals the man with the palsy and forgives the man of his sins. He has compassion on us, even though we do make mistakes and sin. I'm so grateful for that. He can heal us and help us. We just need to come to him just as the leper and the man with the palsy did. :)

Sorry for the gospel tangent but I just love the gospel? Do you know that? :)

Anyways hope you have a great week fam. I sure love you!

Having patient confidence,
Sister Ogden

Miracles and Stretching

1/7/14

Hey everyone! I'm alive and well here in Canada! What a crazy week it has been. My new area is full of surprises. That is one thing I'm learning!

So first off...weather...the only thing I can say is that "it could be worse." haha. It's pretty cold!  But it's nice to drive around in the car. And lately we've had a lot of appointments so we haven't been outside for too long. As for finding...not a lot of people walk around outside in this weather. So we tract a lot or do drop-bys at former's houses. I need to find Uncle Matt's golf balls now, to knock doors with! This morning my car's doors and windshield wipers were completely ice. So that was fun chipping away at that. I've been hoping someone would let us in their home while tracting for a "mercy" factor...but no luck yet. One day...

Okay some cool things have happened this week...

First of all...it has been a week of miracles. Remember the guy we talked to on the street who was less active? Well we dropped by his house and his nonmember wife was there and his two nonmember kids (12) and (8) were there. They want to learn more about our church! Yay! We have a family! I'm so excited to work with them more!

New Years was uneventful as well. Well for New Years Eve and part of New Years day we finished our readathon. So we finished Doctrine and Covenants and Pearl of Great Price. It was fun! After you read the scriptures for 10 hours you learn so much!  I loved being with our zone!

Our newly baptized member has been struggling lately. He's just one of those people who have had a HARD LIFE. Man I don't know how he does it. He's making great changes in his life but it's hard for him. But we've been working with him and even though we still have to really work with him to get him stronger in the church, some great things have happened.

Saturday we had a great day of miracles! First of all we talked to a guy on the street, but he wasn't interested. We asked who he knew that would be interested in talking to us. He pointed us to his neighbor named (name). We went and knocked on the door. No one home. So we started walking away... and then I looked at the house next to us. I stopped. Then was about to continue walking but then I remembered that if you ever stop and think about doing something, it might be the spirit telling you to do it. So I told my companion to knock on this door with me. We did and this woman answered and we talked to her about her family for a while and she wants us to come back next week. We got her info and name and it was...(same lady)! So we had originally knocked on the wrong door the entire time! Crazy!

Then that night we were dropping by some less actives and potentials. When we realized that they had moved, we tracted the next five doors down. No luck. But when we were about to go to our car, my comp said, "Let's knock on one more door over there!" We did and turns out we found another family who are potential investigators. We have to follow up with the mom's schedule but we should be teaching them soon. Yay! Lesson of the day: if you have a thought/prompting... FOLLOW IT...and then afterwards you can decide if it was the spirit or not.

We had a miracle at church! There's this less active lady we've been meeting with for a while who hasn't gone to church for a long time. She came yesterday!!!!! We were so happy! She is the sweetest lady ever! She was so happy to be there too. It was so great to see her happy at church...when I see people happy I'm happy! :)

Unfortunately when things go good...Satan tries to buffet you. This nasty flu has been going around lately. And sad to say my poor comp got it. It's pretty ugly. She was completely out yesterday. We went to church to take the sacrament and to have her get a priesthood blessing. I don't think we even made it through the entire sacrament meeting. So we took her home and I've had to take care of her the past few days. The ward members have been nice though! They dropped off a lot of stuff for us yesterday which meant a lot to us. I'm hoping I don't get it...it seems contagious. But I've been drinking airbourne the past few days so hope that will help.

But I'm grateful because I've learned A LOT the past few days...
1) first of all...I've been a little nervous lately because just of how much this place reminds me of my very first area...and I don't want to get discouraged like I did when I was there. So I was nervous that staying home with a sick companion would make me "relive" that trial and I really didn't want to relive it. But needless to say, I didn't. I wasn't discouraged, and I just felt an overwhelming sense of peace yesterday that everything was okay. And although my companion was asleep knocked out, I wasn't alone. It was pretty remarkable and it meant a lot to me for God to really touch my heart.

2) While I was sick I read Grandma Ogden and Fabrizio's family history about Levere Lefler. It was touching for me and I really enjoyed it. And I found out something CRAAAAZY! Levere's grandpa was born in Ontario...right where our ward is! It's in our area! How cool is that? I was so excited to hear that yesterday.I want to investigate more on the matter! It's awesome!

3) I appreciate you so much mom. I've realized how much work it is to take care of a sick person. Thank you for taking care of me when I was sick. It gets overwhelming sometimes! Because you care about the person so much and you are the only one to cook for them, check on them, clean, make sure they get medicine, etc. I've gotten a little stressed but at the same time it helps me know what to expect when I'm a mom. I didn't realize how much a mission would prepare me for motherhood...and although i still don't know what that exactly is like yet I feel like I'm learning to deal with a lot of things I wouldn't deal if I were home.

So it's been a great week...but a stretching week. But I know stretching weeks are necessary. I'm grateful for a loving Heavenly Father who is so patient with us...despite our weaknesses. I'm so grateful to be here. I LOVE IT! And I just want to keep helping people accept the gospel. I just got super shocked though because I still email and keep in touch with Sister (name) and she goes home in 3 transfers. Oh. My. Goodness.

Anyways love you all! You are great. Thanks for being the amazing people you are because you truly are amazing!

I Can Do All Things Through Christ (and with snow tires)

12/31/13

Whenever I write an email I feel like there is SO much to say. But obviously I can't tell you everything! But I'll tell you as much as I can.

I'm glad I could your beautiful faces last week! It was very surreal to me; like it didn't seem real. And it went by way too fast. I was doing good and then when I hung up I was just left alone sitting in the dining room. I guess I had a "wake up call" and was reminded just how much I love you guys. I did get a little homesick afterwards but I recovered and now I'm okay and life's grand! It makes me feel better to know that it made YOU happy to Skype. I couldn't give you Christmas presents but I hope I could make you happy and that you could feel MY love for you!

Gifts. Wow. I am spoiled. Thanks so so so so so much. The scripture book... WAS MY FAVORITE!!!!!! It was my favorite. I love it so so so much. I've been going through and marking all of your favorite scriptures in my scriptures so thanks. THANKS FOR ALL WHO WROTE IN IT! It made me :) big time! And I took a pic of me with it with my new camera! I'm going to be taking loads of pics because....I haven't been able to for half of my mission. Yikes. So thanks! You are the best.
Christmas Morning!
She LOVED the scripture book

Comp with Christmas card Aerin created for her.

We've been getting people who want to meet with us so they can take us on dates...It has happened 2x in the last 2 weeks so i'm getting a little frustrated with that.

Okay new area...I'm starting to get the hang of it. It's not as scary driving around. I love it because we actually don't get as buffeted with snow like some of the other areas  do. So that makes me happy! Anyways...it's going good! The people are really nice and the ward members are super sweet and nice to me. I still think it's weird not talking to as many people as I did back in Toronto but it's fun.

I love it because it teaches me how I need to be more grateful for the gospel and my life. And the people here are very humble...it's cool to see that. I feel like a lot of them are being prepared because they have so many trials and struggles.

Contacting has been..okay. The holidays have been hindering. So I'm actually happy to say the holidays are over! But there was a cool thing that happened. We were walking to an investigator's house to drop by and on the way two people walked by. We stopped them and turns out one of them was a less active member. And then his wife/daughter (I couldn't tell) wasn't a member and wanted to learn more about our church. So they told us to come back sometime. I'm excited to go see them! It was a testimony builder to me that the Lord places people in the paths of the missionaries!

We got a new investigator yesterday. He is an older gentleman. My impression is that it might take him time to understand and accept everything, but he could do it. But I guess you never know...We're just going to try our best and see what happens! :)

Our other investigator is doing well...yesterday was kinda a bummer because we had a ride lined up for her and everything. And she called in sick. Oh well we're going to keep seeing her. I guess yesterday was just not the day. Next week!

We're still trying to rebuild!  But obviously it takes time. I'm so excited because now that it is new year I feel like we are going to start finding a lot more people. This area has a lot of potential. I'm excited!

But anyways....this last week was Service Week for us. We served and served and served. It was fun! We helped take down Christmas decorations at one home, and then we helped a brother move and then we helped clean another family's house. It was super fun! It helped me realize how service is just something great. I remembered when I was little how I'd always complain about service projects. But now I love them because it's just a great opportunity to help out and be the Savior's hands for a little while.

The driving has been going great. It hasn't snowed that much so the roads aren't bad. And it snowed on our way home from our conference but I just know that the scriptures are true when they say "I can do all things through Christ which strengthenth me" I feel like I'm gaining more confidence on the roads. Obviously I still get a little nervous but I know that God's going to protect me as long as I try to be extra careful. They actually plow the roads here sooooo much more than they did in Utah. I feel like the roads are a lot less icy...but that's just me :)

Speaking of weather... I'm not freezing! But it's a little chilly. I got excited because yesterday it got a good 3 degrees C! But now today it's back at 8 below. Oh well. Layers are the best! And since I'm now in the car it's really not that bad.

Last thing! This last week was interviews with our mission president. I. Loved. It. Pres and Sis are so inspired. We were supposed to bring to the interview something we really wanted to work on and lay aside. I chose to work on not comparing myself to others (because I tend to do that).  We got on a great discussion of being more positive and grateful. He told me that when we compare ourselves to others and put ourselves down...we are showing that we're not very grateful to God for creating US and creating who WE are. It brought a neat perspective. We need to appreciate our talents and thank Heavenly Father for them. At first I thought that that was prideful in doing so. But in reality that's part of having humility --  being grateful. You can still love yourself and rely on the Lord and be humble. I'm trying harder to be more grateful for everything that God's given me. I've seen a lot of miracles from doing that. If you are having a "woe is me" day...say a grattitude prayer. It's super hard but in the end you just feel so much better and you realize how grateful and indebted you are to God.

Anyways I'm grateful to be here. I love you all. I'm starting to love this area more and more as I serve here and I know that that love is just going to grow stronger and deeper.

Patient Confidence! (from the Book of Chad)

Christmas Transfer

12/16/13

Dear Family:

Wow! Man so much has been running through my mind I am on a mental, emotional, ROLLER COASTER! I don't know where to start...
First...yesterday was quite the day let me tell you. First of all, the bishop had asked us missionaries to do a Christmas program for sacrament meeting. We had to set up this program and in the program we had a couple of musical numbers. We had to practice A LOT. I was super super super nervous because the first song, Silent Night, for verse 2 I sang a duet with another sister and I sang alto. I was scared!!!! But Dad, you would have been proud of me! Because...I DID it! And I think I did okay! The Spirit was strong and a lot of the ward was touched. Then each of the companionships gave a testimony on each of the characters in the nativity. We matched each character to a Christlike attribute. So Mary was virtuous, Joseph was obedience, the shepherds were humility and the wisemen were sacrifice. I did a talk on the wisemen. I just bore testimony of how much they sacrificed and how they sacrificed the BEST gifts for the savior. And I just talked about how we need to ask ourselves if we are giving our best time and efforts to the savior. It was fun but man I was nervous. Because not only was this in front of our ward, but the Etobicoke and Spanish wards got cancelled so all the missionaries from those wards (including zone leaders and sister training leaders) all came and watched. But again, it was good!

Dad, thanks for being such an awesome member missionary. Those experiences are AWESOME! It helps me know that we can always be a missionary, even if you don't have the name tag on. But yeah thanks again for your testimony of reaching out and sharing the gospel and the light of Christ with others. It is so cool!

It's so funny that you hear more about Toronto than I do. I never hear any of those things you tell me...haha I guess it's good I'm out of the loop. It has been snowing...and cold...like crazy! REAL winter hit this last week!  At first I was like, "I can do this!" But man it gets cold sometimes!  The weather makes missionary work an adventure that's for sure! I gotta bundle up even more nowadays! But the snow is pretty and it feels all christmasy so that's good!

So as you know transfers came.
I'm leaving and my comp is too. She is headed to another town to be a trainer and to whitewash. She will have a blast! There are Elders replacing us. I'm headed out to the country.

My comp has already been serving there. I have no idea where my area is or what's going on. I am so so nervous because I might be driving in the snow. I don't know what I'm gonna do! I already scratched a mission car!  I move tomorrow.  So many mixed emotions. I couldn't even sleep last night because so many things were running through my head.

I just remember when I first came here I was nervous because I really really liked Toronto. I really did. I didn't know why I was here.

But now I know why.
I was here because the people here have changed me.
·         The recent convert (Nigeria) who has had the most trails and challenges I have seen in a person's life. And how she continues to hold on and believe in God when all other logical reason tells her to curse him.
·         Our newly baptized friend (name)...how he has changed. How the gospel has blessed him. How he has been happier and healthier and better.
·         (Another newly baptized friend) (Nigeria) ...how he taught me that the gospel brings happiness even if you have to sleep 2 hrs/day
·         (Name)...how you can be a missionary and a good example to your friends even if you can't be baptized.
·         And last but not least, (name)... As you recall...last week we had only taught our friend from Guyana the restoration and the Word of Wisdom. I was nervous to see how it would all play out because her bap date was for the 15th. But God works miracles.  And I saw it this last week. We saw her every day and we were able to teach her everything. She was able to understand. And she became more and more excited to be baptized. She has great faith. Although her family isn't the most supportive, she followed what the Lord told her to do. And He told her to be baptized.

Her baptism service went well yesterday. She said she was happy. And the ward really took her in. I haven't baptized a sister yet..until her. She is like my grandma! She has the sweetest spirit ever. It's amazing how prepared she was. I'm so happy for her. I'm proud of her. And she is a strong and elect woman. I'll never forget these three weeks we've had together.

(Cropped to respect privacy)
And I also want to testify how God helps me so so so so so so so much. While (name) was changing from her baptism, I had to give a thought in front of all the members and people who were visiting. I was nervous because I didn't know what to say. But I know that God keeps his promises. I was not confounded. And words just came. I testified of the Atonement and what a blessing it is in our lives...how we wouldn't need baptism or the church if Christ hadn't come down and paid the price for our sins. I said things that I've never said before. I felt the Spirit so strong. I probably needed to hear the things that came out of my mouth far more than the other people did. It was a cool experience for me.

The district Christmas party was amazing. We had an ugly sweater exchange, we played a game, and we ate a lot of junk food. Man I love my district/zone. I JUST LOVE PEOPLE! I'm going to miss everyone sooo much. But I know I'm needed elsewhere so I can't argue or complain. But the people I've worked with in my district have influenced me so much. I can't thank them enough for their testimonies and examples and love towards me. It's funny because there's been a change in each companionship in our district. And our district leader became a zone leader...get this in the same zone! Crazy!

My comp's birthday was awesome. We made cake and while she was showering I decorated our house with streamers and balloons. (This is where I can say I'm grateful I worked as a party host for Trafalga and had to decorate rooms) I don't mean to brag but I decorated it all pretty in like 15 min. It was awesome! :) But yeah we saw a lot of miracles that day and it was just great! She's 21! I swear all my companions are older than me, but I'm older than them (mission wise) It's weird!  Man I'm gonna miss her so much though. I've really gotten to know her this past transfer and all I can say is she is F.S.T.L (Future Sister Training Leader).

Anyways...other investigators have been good. But our friend from Congo couldn't make it to church cause of the snow. (AARG the dreaded snow)  We had a ward christmas party this last saturday and (name) came. By the way, they did this nativity that was awesome! It brought back memories of acting it in Grandma and Grandpa Richins' house. They had decorations, costumes, everything. They had Samuel the Lamanite on a tower! It was so cool! The party was awesome because we saw a lot of less actives that came out.
We've been caroling, giving out Joy to the World dvds, and sharing Christmas messages with the ward members. It's been fun.  We've also been focusing on helping them invite their friends to hear a Christmas message.  So it's been a good finding tool.

I looove you family! Thanks for being so supportive and awesome. I seriously couldn't be here and doing this without you. But each week as it goes by my testimony of this work increases. I know it's true. And I'm coming to understand what that really means to me more and more each and every day. I know it. I live it. I love it!
